Our Mission

Our Mission

Girls Mean Business is a nonprofit project dedicated to empowering women in business globally, from supply chain to consumption. We work to increase awareness of the issues women face in industry around the world; be it labor standards, fair pay, or misogynistic cultural practices within companies, industries, and wider society. 

 

We do this through our efforts to transform high schools into Fair Trade zones, assisting schools in sourcing ethically manufactured products and adopting best practices. We also aim to educate consumers, enabling them to make ethical choices regarding their purchases. We strive to raise awareness about how many companies continue to limit progress for women through unfair practices and policies. Advocacy for new legislation is a crucial aspect of our mission, ensuring that businesses adhere to ethical practices. Additionally, we extend our support to female entrepreneurs, recognizing their vital role in driving positive change within industries.

What is Fair Trade?

Fair trade ensures that farmers and workers receive fair wages and working conditions. It promotes ethical and sustainable practices, aiming to improve working conditions and empower communities. By choosing fair trade products, consumers support a more just and equitable global trade system, fostering positive social and environmental impacts.

About the Creator

Bella

My name is Bella, and I am a high schooler from New York City. I’ve grown up in a world of consumption, production, capitalism, and options. We have so many products at our fingertips, and so many businesses competing for our money and attention, that it's easy to reach for the most available product rather than really considering where it came from. 

 

As I’ve taken a deeper look into the industries and supply chains that make it possible for us to have all these things, I’ve noticed a common theme: the mistreatment, oppression, and exploitation of women. From fast fashion factories in Bangladesh to female coffee farmers in Brazil, women are perpetually underpaid and undervalued. 

 

How we treat women in one part of the world reflects how we think of them everywhere. The more we buy from these unethical companies, the more we enable these bad practices. This project is about giving people the tools they need to become more knowledgeable about the companies we buy from, knowing that the choices we make here have such a huge impact on people—especially women—elsewhere in the world.
